This whole saga surrounding the Ikoyi Diddy matter is a stark, jarring reminder of a tough truth I’ve always held close: you can be smart, talented, and utterly brilliant, but once character is missing, everything else is sitting on ‘borrowed time’.
The funny, almost humorous, thing about life is that your private habits don’t stay private forever. We often live with an illusion of secrecy. You think the things you indulge in are “just vibes” or “just a phase,” but those choices eventually grow legs. And when they finally decide to show up—when your character is tested by life—they don’t knock. They just enter and take over.
This is why having a moral compass is not old-fashioned, and why values are not merely “churchy” concepts. At the end of the day, something deeper than intelligence, talent, or even success has to guide you.
Talent without boundaries is simply potential waiting to scatter.
No amount of money or influence can clean up the mess that lack of self-control will inevitably create. You can have the best branding, the finest public perception, and even national recognition, but if the foundation is crooked—if the foundation is destroyed—life will expose it.
We often celebrate gifts and abilities, and rightly so. Your gifts can announce you; they can open doors and get you a seat at the table. Yes.
But it is your ingrained character that sustains the announcement. We absolutely do not talk about that part enough—the discipline, the restraint, the intentional fear and love of God! This is the infrastructure that keeps the roof from falling.
The world wants you to believe that hustle is all that matters. It wants you to pursue greatness at any cost. But greatness without a moral and disciplined foundation is just a matter of time before the decadence spills.
What is my critical lesson from all these high-profile examples of self-destruction? It boils down to three essential responses for a lasting legacy:
Protect Your Name: Your name is your most valuable asset. Live with the consciousness that every choice is either adding to or subtracting from your integrity account.
Guard Your Choices and Your Heart: The heart is the wellspring of life. What you allow in your private space will define your public life. Be a faithful gatekeeper.
Cultivate Godly Morality: Live with accountability and intentionally help your kids develop a profound sense of morality and Godliness. This is the only inheritance that will outlast any bank account.
Don’t let your talent become the vessel for your downfall. Focus on building the foundation that cannot be shaken.
